Breastfeeding is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition. Breast milk, often called “liquid gold,” contains a unique blend of essential nutrients, enzymes, hormones, growth factors, and live, disease-fighting properties. This composition not only provides optimal nutrition for your baby’s brain growth and nervous system development but also reduces the immediate and lifelong risk of disease for both mother and child.
At Women’s Health Physicians and Surgeons, we are dedicated to empowering and equipping women to breastfeed. As women’s healthcare providers, we believe it is our responsibility to support normal breastfeeding physiology, foster healthy breastfeeding practices, and effectively manage common breastfeeding challenges with compassionate and evidence-based care.
We recognize that breastfeeding plays a vital role in building a strong bond between mother and baby, and we understand that feeding challenges can affect both infant growth and maternal mental health. Our approach is to meet parents where they are, providing comfort, encouragement, and individualized feeding plans that are realistic, tailored to your specific needs, and aligned with your personal goals—all while ensuring your baby receives optimal nutrition. We believe that education and support are the cornerstones of successful breastfeeding, and we are proud to offer a variety of services designed to meet your unique needs.
Breastfeeding Classes
Our prenatal breastfeeding class provides a solid foundation for understanding breastfeeding and preparing for your baby’s arrival. This 90-minute interactive session offers evidence-based information designed to help families set realistic expectations and work towards their breastfeeding goals. Topics covered include the physiology of breastfeeding (how it works), proper latch and positioning techniques, strategies for avoiding common breastfeeding challenges, and tips for establishing a strong milk supply. The class is offered monthly and is highly recommended for mothers and fathers in their third trimester of pregnancy.
In-Office Consultation
Our dedicated team of lactation consultants and physicians offers advanced and comprehensive lactation care to women across Northeast Alabama and the surrounding areas. During this one-on-one consultation, we conduct a detailed review of your medical and breastfeeding history, along with pre-feed and post-feed weight checks to accurately measure the volume of milk your infant is transferring. Each visit is customized to meet your family’s specific needs and goals.
We recommend scheduling a breastfeeding consultation within 1-2 weeks of delivery for all new mothers. Our expert support is available throughout your breastfeeding journey to help you overcome common challenges and ensure a positive breastfeeding experience.
Natural Family Planning
Breastfeeding often extends the time women go without menstrual cycles, making the postpartum and breastfeeding period particularly challenging for those practicing Natural Family Planning (NFP). During this time, the usual signs of fertility can become inconsistent and harder to interpret.
The Marquette Method is an evidence-based, natural, and effective approach to NFP that uses daily monitoring of reproductive hormone levels to track fertility. This method includes specific protocols for the postpartum and breastfeeding phases, helping to reduce the stress of preventing pregnancy while transitioning from suppressed fertility back to regular cycles.
Insurance Coverage
Most commercial insurance plans cover breastfeeding-related office visits at 100%. For those without coverage, we provide affordable options to ensure access to our services.
